Description

For tens of thousands of years Indigenous people worldwide have been using plants as sources of food, medicines and decorations, In Australia, this has been the case for at least 65,000 years, but industries are only now catching up to the potential of our native plants. Gaby will introduce you to both some of the well-known and more obscure native Australian plants, from a research-based perspective. We will discuss some of the traditional uses already written about in the public domain, the latest scientific data available, and how you can use these plants in your kitchen or medicine cabinet. You will be able to see, smell and taste a variety of these amazing plants and learn where you can ethically source them and how to cook with them.

Presented by Gaby Harris

Gaby is a naturopath, herbalist and massage therapist who has been in practice since 2000. She has also been lecturing and training naturopathy students since 2005 and is passionate about all things herbal. Gaby is not an Indigenous Australian, but in 2016 she co-wrote the first national course unit on Indigenous Plants for Food and Medicine (for Endeavour College of Natural Heath) and the subject has since become an obsession. She loves sharing her knowledge with anyone willing to listen. In her spare time Gaby enjoys pottering around her small garden with her dog, Playdough, and her 5 chickens. She also enjoys experimenting in the kitchen with native ingredients – especially baking sweet treats.

Interesting and informative. Well presented and had a chance to taste and smell different plants. Will definitely be including in my garden some of the plants which could be purchased at Nursery.

19 June 2019 • Native Plants for Food and Medicine

A great overview of our beautiful native flora, with in depth slides explaining the indigenous origins and uses. Taste testing and smelling of each of the plants really brought the presentation to a new level, with some lovely home-made biscuits, containing the plant parts spoken about, to enjoy during the interval as well. The presenter was knowledgeable and friendly, open to questions and feedback giving the class an inviting and professional feel.

Such an informative and interactive workshop. Gaby is also deeply respectful of the indigenous heritage of the plants and knowledge you learn about. Highly recommend.
