Description

Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangment, goes beyond floristry and into an accredited art form. The Sogetsu School of Ikebana is one of the largest and most modern among the many different schools, and in this class experienced and Sogetsu School-trained teacher Emily Karanikolopoulos will show you everything you need to know to create an arrangement of your own. Students will initially watch a demonstration of the basic style of ikebana - this is the first lesson of the Sogetsu curriculum and all other variations of arrangements are based on this style - and will then be able to make the same arrangement following the teacher’s direction. The teacher will walk around the room assisting participants whilst they are making their arrangements.

About Emily Karanikolopoulos

Emily studied ikebana for 18 years before awarded the degree Riji, the highest accreditation possible outside Japan. She has been teaching since 2004 and has conducted workshops in Melbourne, Brisbane, Wellington and Christchurch, and has exhibited countless times in Melbourne for the Sogetsu school and Ikebana International as well as in Tokyo in 2014. She also spent  three months in Tokyo, studying at Sogetsu headquarters as the recipient of the Norman and Mary Sparnon scholarship, and demonstrated the art before some 1100 delegates and three Japanese Royal Princesses in 2017 at the Ikebana International World Convention in Okinawa.

She is also a regular exhibitor at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, and has been awarded several prizes, including three firsts in the Shop Window Competition.
